Lopez Sidelined 30 Days for Wild Applause Wreck; Castellano Banged Up, One Horse Injured
There’s no good way for four horses to hit the deck in a stakes race, and what happened in the Wild Applause on opening day at Saratoga was as ugly as they come. The Spa’s stewards have now handed Paco Lopez a 30-day suspension for his role in the spill, and word out of the jockeys’ room is that his agent, Jose Garcia, isn’t taking it lying down — an appeal is already in the works, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.
Anyone who’s watched enough races knows how fast these things turn from routine to terrifying. Per the Equibase chart, Lopez’s mount, I Love Giraffes, got in tight and bumped hindquarters with Pillar of Beauty, then clipped heels — left foreleg catching outside the quarter-pole — and went down. Once one horse falls in that kind of tight quarters, the domino effect is almost impossible to stop, and sure enough three more horses hit the ground in the aftermath.
The silver lining, if you can call it that, is that most everyone walked away. Tyler Gaffalione aboard Smexy and Dylan Davis on Lovely Grey both came out the other side without serious damage to horse or rider. Paris Carver escaped unscathed as well. Her rider wasn’t so lucky — Javier Castellano will be out of action for the better part of July with a minor lower back injury, NYRA confirmed in a statement issued July 8. Lopez himself walked away clean, but I Love Giraffes didn’t: the filly suffered a fractured hip and is now on the mend.
None of this is keeping Lopez out of the saddle in the short term, at least not yet. He’s got mounts entered today at Delaware Park, and he’s slated to work Colonial Downs’ upcoming stand from July 9 through July 13 — presumably while the appeal plays out.
The stakes for Lopez go well beyond a few days at the minor tracks, though. He’s the regular pilot for Book’em Danno, the reigning champion male sprinter, who’s pointing for the Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 17. A day later, Lopez is also expected to be aboard Preakness winner Napoleon Solo, the likely centerpiece of the field for Monmouth’s Grade 1 Haskell Stakes.
This isn’t Lopez’s first brush with the disciplinary side of the sport, and racing fans with long memories will recall it hasn’t been a quiet couple of years for him. Back in September 2025, HISA came down hard with a six-month suspension after finding he’d breached the terms of a conditional reinstatement tied to a whip-use violation aboard National Law at Parx Racing in December 2024. Rather than sit out entirely, Lopez went to Louisiana that October — a jurisdiction outside HISA’s reach — and kept riding through the suspension. That stretch didn’t come without its own setback either: a broken ankle cost him the tail end of this year’s Fair Grounds meet.
Whether the appeal shaves any time off this latest 30-day sit remains to be seen. For now, Lopez’s connections — and plenty of horsemen with Saratoga and Monmouth stakes on the calendar — will be watching closely to see how it shakes out.
