Quills Picks Winners – Friday 5/15 – Laurel Park Race 13

Like many people world, our focus is not on Baltimore, but Laurel Park as it is Preakness weekend. Things will look different this year as Q&A Racing will be covering the second leg of the Triple Crown tomorrow. But until then, there are still some great races in Maryland this afternoon.

We will talk a look at race 13 of a 14-race card. Our race is the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan, and these three-year-old fillies will race a mile and an eighth around the Laurel Park oval. Note for this year that this race is one lap around the main track as the configuration of the track is different from the usual host in Pimlico.

Let’s take a look at this field of 10 fillies as they run in this Grade 2 race.

Laurel Park Race 13 – Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (Grade 2)

Favored in the Black-Eyed Susan is the 7 Jumping the Gun (3/1 morning line). She finished third in the Weber City Miss Stakes here at Laurel last month. That was her first race in four month and definitely needed it as she tired late. But she has an excuse has she bore out at the start and was wide throughout. She has not won while racing two turns yet, but she is bred for these long races.

The 9 A.P.’s Girl (5/1 ML) rated off the pace and got the lead in the stretch and was outkicked to the finish. She won her previous two races in open company at the Fair Grounds going two turns and should be able to handle the extra half-furlong here this afternoon.

The 10 My Miss Mo (7/2 ML) draws the outside post in this race but should be able to handle the move onto the first turn today. She appears to be the speed in this race and looks to take this field gate to wire.

The 3 Holly’s Holiday (6/1 ML) won two in a row after wining the Valley of the Vapors Stakes at Oaklawn last month. She stretches out here and should be sitting right behind the front runners here.

Joe’s Pick

Jumping the Gun and My Miss Mo are the two fillies in this race that are suited the best to go the nine furlongs here this afternoon. I think Jumping the Gun will get a better start and a better trip and end up winning the Black-Eyed Susan today.

I’m calling this race 7-10-9-3 and my play is $20 to win on the 7. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
