Turfway Park Race 9 – Maiden Special Weight
Favored in this maiden race is the 5 Up Country (5/2 ML). He raced for the first time in three months when he appeared here at Turfway last month. Racing on the synthetic for the first time that day, he tired and finished fifth. Since that race he has been gelded, which is an angle some handicappers like to play. He should be close to the pace here today in his first race since he was gelded and second since the layoff.
The 4 Fly Guy Mick (6/1 ML) shortens up after flattening out in a maiden race here two weeks ago. He ran well in his first two races here at Turfway which were both at tonight’s distance. He should be sitting towards the back and make a strong late move.
The 7 Prime Edge (3/1 ML) races for the second time at Turfway after finishing third last month. He appears to be getting primed for Woodbine’s upcoming season, which also has a synthetic main track. He has improved with each start and has some versatility here.
The 9 Mighty Mike (15/1 ML) races for the first time since last May, so he probably needs this race. But his best race last year was his debut where he finished third last March here at Turfway Park. He has the stamina and might be a horse that despite the breeding might not like the turf.
Joe’s Pick
One angle that I like his second time off of the layoff. The trainer for Prime Edge has done well with horses with a second race off of a layoff. He has the breeding to do well here and this is from what I can see a prep race for the upcoming Woodbine season. He should be ready to graduate here today.
I’m calling this race 7-9-5-4 and my play is $20 to win on the 7. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
