Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 5/19 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5

After a tough less yesterday at Parx, we head back up to the Great White North for today’s race of the day. We head to what I think will be our spring and summer Tuesday track, Assiniboia Downs, as a field of six will sprint five furlongs.

Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in our featured race under the lights is the 5 My Liam (6/5 morning line). He comes in from Oaklawn Park where he was passed late in a starter allowance race. This looks like a private sale after that race and ends up north of the border. He will gun for the lead like his races over the last few months at Oaklawn and Fair Grounds, but will he be able to hold on?

The 2 Trulli Warrior (3/1 ML) also moved north via what appears to be a private sale. Last time out at Laurel at the end of February, he was bumped around at the start but that optional claiming race and took over around the quarter pole and won. He has trained at Woodbine and then head west to Winnipeg for his Canadian debut.

The 1 Bergheim (4/1 ML) made a spring-like migration going from Sam Houston and Lone Star in Texas to Fonner Park in Nebraska in the last three months. He closed strongly on the Fonner bullring track finishing second despite being very wide on both turns of the five-furlong track. Look for him to be moving late this evening.

The 4 Designated Hitter (10/1 ML) is the only horse in tonight’s field that has run in Winnipeg. He held his own in his 2025 finale at Woodbine, finishing fourth, but still not that far behind the leader. His best races last year here at AsD was not far off the pace, but is another horse that will be moving late.

Joe’s Pick

My Liam will be the obvious favorite here tonight as he comes in after running most recently at Oaklawn Park. It is possible that he will be challenged early which should set things up for Bergheim and Designated Hitter. But I think My Liam is just too good for this group.

I’m calling this 5-1-4-2 and my play is $20 to win on the 5. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
