Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 6/23 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5

It’s Tuesday which means we head north of the border and under the lights for our race of the day. Today’s race is the fifth on a seven-race card. A field of eight horses will sprint six furlongs in the Free Press Stakes this evening.

Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Free Press Stakes

Favored in the Free Press Stakes is the 4 Mission Beach (9/5 morning line). He won two races in a row, including a race at Prairie Meadows last time out three weeks ago. He races at Assiniboia Downs for the first time today and should be not far off of the pace here this evening.

The 2 Dreaming of Kona (5/1 ML) finished third in the Beau Blade Stakes after going four-wide on the turn. He has been further back in his last two starts and will look to get up late this evening.

The 8 Ceepeegee (3/1 ML) is the speed of this race and tired late in the Beau Blade Stakes, finishing second. He will be on the lead here, but will he be there at the end?

The 7 What’s Shakin (8/1 ML) went last to first to win an optional claiming race here three weeks ago. This is his second race of the season after having the winter off but he may want longer as the AsD season progresses.

We know that Ceepeegee will go for the lead. Mission Beach will get a perfect stalking trip and will take over late when Ceepeegee tired. Mission Beach will have to hold off What’s Shakin late but will get there for the win this evening.
