Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 7 – Checkered Flag Handicap

The favorite in today’s featured race is the 11 Imagine the Moon (7/2 morning line). She was near the pace in the Shelby County Handicap, rallying in the stretch for a two-length win. This is her third race of the year after a seven-month layoff and could get a nice stalking spot here today from her outside post today.

The 4 Hot Middles (9/2 ML) closed under mild urging to win the Corningstone Handicap here at Horseshoe Indy last month. This will be her fourth race of the year and she can close from towards the back of the pack as well as from a stalking position. That versatility will help her as she probably has run her best three races in back-to-back races this year.

The 1 Three Coats (8/1 ML) returns to Indiana after a trip to Churchill Downs two weeks ago. She finished fourth in a one-turn, one-mile race where she was wide. She draws the rail today which may not be ideal but could be a nice trip here.

The 7 Bits of Candy (12/1 ML) races for the first time since October where she faded in a handicap race. There is some cause for concern that there is a break in her workouts getting ready for her return, but she could come back today and getting a piece of this since there appears to be so much speed in this race.

Joe’s Pick

There is enough speed here that I think that the stalkers and closers have a great chance in a wide open race. The 8 The Kid Pataky is a speed demon. Werk It Wendy likewise. Ekati Flatter tired badly last time out going for the lead. They all next to each other in the gate and probably fighting for the lead.

This sets up nicely for the favorite Imagine the Moon, even with the far outside post. She can sit right behind the leaders and take over in the stretch. But I think Hot Middles is running very well this year and will get up late for the win.

I’m calling this race 4-11-1-7 and my play is $20 to win on the 4. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
