Quills Picks Winners – Wednesday 7/1 – Delaware Park Race 8

Quills Picks Winners – Wednesday 7/1 – Delaware Park Race 8

We open up the second half of the year (if we talk in terms of it being the seventh month) and we head to the First State where we have a heat wave here in the eastern half of the country. If you saw the article posted last night, tracks have cancelled or altered their schedules.

In the case of Delaware Park, they cancelled Thursday and Friday but pushed first post today to 11 am. We will look at race eight this afternoon, which is scheduled for a 2:30 pm post, but don’t be surprised if the post times are expedited this afternoon to get the card in before the real heat hits.

Our race this afternoon is a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares in this optional claiming race.

Delaware Park Race 8 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in our featured race today is the 5 Sassarassness (6/5 morning line). She finished fourth in a ratings handicap race here two weeks ago. She had traffic trouble last time out in that race both on the turn and in the stretch which may have played a part in her off the board finish. Look for a stalking trip this afternoon.

The 6 Embrace the Moment (8/5 ML). She went gate to wire and won easily against allowance company here at Delaware Park last month. There is a bunch of speed in this race, but it is very possible that she replicates last month’s win.

The 1 Nancy Mary (6/1 ML) appears to the closer in this race. She had a wide trip at Laurel Park at the end of May and finished fourth. She draws the rail today, but she might be looking for another overland finish here this afternoon, or maybe the rail opens up late.

The 2 Social Fortress (6/1 ML) races for the second time off of a long layoff after she gave way late in an optional claiming race here at Delaware Park. She needed that race and will look to improve off of that effort.

Joe’s Pick

I cannot ignore Sassafrassness here this afternoon. She had traffic trouble on the turn and around the eighth pole. Granted, she might not have won the race without the trouble, but the trouble was a contributor to the finish. Look for a perfect stalking trip with the speed in this race to get up for the win.

I’m calling this race 5-6-1-2 and my play is $20 to win on the 5. Best of luck, stay cool and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
