Quills Picks Winners – Friday 7/3 – Saratoga Race 10

The summer season at Saratoga is underway, or so we think. As we all know, the weather has been insanely hot throughout the eastern half of the country, and several tracks have cancelled their races. But as of when this was typed up, races will go on to a certain extent.

The New York Gaming Commission does have protocols in place in case the weather does get too hot and from what I gather, they could cancel mid-card. But we hope that we do get this race in today.

Our race is the Saranac Staes as three-year-olds who never won a stakes race will go a mile and a sixteenth on the Mellon (or outer) turf course.

Live Oak Plantation’s Our Flash Drive, Dylan Davis up, built off her recent pair of graded stakes placings on grass with a one-length victory in the 19th running of Sunday’s $135,000 Fasig-Tipton De La Rose for older fillies and mares going one mile over the inner turf.

Saratoga Race 10 – Saranac Stakes

Favored in the Saranac Stakes is the 11 Arizona Territory (5/2 morning line). He won two in a row including a powerful win while very wide at Aqueduct in May. He has the misfortune of a wide post, but if he can settle behind the leaders, he could have a perfect opportunity to close.

The 7 Glavine (4/1 ML) finished fourth in the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge here last month. He was bumped around at the start and was wide on both turns but still made a nice move late. He may be wide here today again but as shown he can he close at the end.

The 1 Siyouincanada (9/2 ML) went gate to wire in his debut at the end of May at Churchill Downs. He faces winners and stakes company for the first time, but these are not world beaters. This colt could lull the field to sleep with the rail position and no real speed in this field.

The 10 Zeppelin (10/1 ML) finished third in the Audubon Stakes at Churchill Downs back in the end of May. He shortens up and might have the strongest closing kick in this field. If the field goes too fast, he might be able to upset this field.

Joe’s Pick

Lone speed is a dangerous thing, especially in New York where it seems like most turf races are mad dashes to the finish. I can see Siyouincanada going for the lead and getting the job done going gate to wire here. Zeppelin and Arizona Territory will both be closing, but I think Siyouincanada gets home first today.

I’m calling this race 1-10-11-7 and my play is $20 to win on the 1. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
