Quills Picks Winners – Thursday 7/30 – Del Mar Race 7
Yesterday we switched things up and ended up at Horseshoe Indianapolis. With the Glens Falls Stakes, which was to run on the grass today moved to Sunday, I have decided to switch things up and head out to Del Mar for today’s race of the day.
Our QPW feature today is race seven of an eight-race card. In this race we have fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs on the main track in an optional claiming race. This may not be the sexiest race in the world, but it is a full field of 12 horses that will make this race intriguing to handicap.

Favored in this evening’s race is the 10 Syntax (7/2 morning line). She raced last month at Santa Anita in the Desert Stormer Stakes and dueled in the stretch and was denied. She has raced well while sprinting and should be dangerous here. Also note that she is going from a minor stake to an allowance race here this afternoon. It’s not necessarily a suspicious drop but in a familiar spot for a new trainer.
The 3 Miss Kona (4/1 ML) races for the first time since Halloween here at Del Mar where she finished off the board in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes. She returns this afternoon as a three-year-old who gets Lasix for the first time. If she can get the set up today, she will be closing late.
The 5 Bessie Coleman (8/1 ML) finished third in a similarly conditioned race at Los Alamitos at the beginning of the month. She will near the pace this afternoon and should be trying to make a move late from a stalking position.
The 7 The Loan Exchange (12/1 ML) is an intriguing entry here. She won her debut race in April on the grass sprinting on the newer turf chute via a disqualification. She got bumped late and just missed in that race. This filly moved to the main track where it looks like that’s where her pedigree looks like it’s for the main track and longer.

Joe’s Pick
I want to take either The Loan Exchange or Miss Kona here but I will let them beat me off of the layoff. I think that Syntax will win for her new connections today as he always seems to run well sprinting six furlongs on the main track.
I’m calling this race 10-5-3-7 and my play is $20 to win on the 10. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
