Quills Picks Winners – Monday 9/14 – Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 5

We are starting off this week a bit differently than I expected. I thought we would be starting our Monday like we do most Mondays at my hometown track Parx Racing as it is Pennsylvania Derby week. The Pennsylvania Derby is this weekend and we will be looking at Parx on Also Eligible this weekend.

But we have a curveball here today as we head to Horseshoe Indianapolis for our race of the day. Our featured race is race five of a ten-race card. A field of 11 horses with up to ten horses running will sprint five furlongs on their turf course this afternoon.

Note that the 11 Goodluckinjustice (6/5 morning line) will need the race to run on the main track as he is a “main track only” entrant. But we will look at this race as a race that will stay on the turf here today in this optional claiming race.

Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 5 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored amongst the main body of the field is the 4 Dark Vintage (7/2 ML). He finished second on the dirt at Prairie Meadows and actually had the lead late, but was caught in the stretch as a heavy favorite. His long race at Horseshoe Indy on the turf was a win under similar conditions and has held his own for the most part since coming to America last year.

The 2 Golden Ale (4/1 ML) is the speed towards the inside in this race and comes in from Ellis Park where he defeated claimers there. He appears to know only one way to run and that’s on the lead. But there is speed on the outside that may try to hook up and duel with him early on today.

The 6 Boltage (5/1 ML)comes in from Saratoga where he was dueling for the lead and was passed as they turned for home. He gets some class relief returning to Horseshoe Indy and should be stalking the pace like he has in his previous two races, including a win here in July.

The 8 Monsieur Candy (6/1 ML) had to steady here at Indy last month but still finished second in a similar race. Look for him to stalk the lead here this afternoon and might have a great chance here today with a clean trip.

There was a slight bobble approaching the turn with Monsieur Candy in his previous race, but it may not have been that significant. But I think he fits nicely here and should get a nice stalking trip here today. Boltage will find this field a bit easier but I think the Candy guy gets up for the win here today.
