Baffert's Oaks Contingent Reduced as Bottle of Rouge Exits, Lovely Grey Gains Entry

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bob Baffert’s Kentucky Oaks prospects were halved Sunday morning at Churchill Downs when post-workout complications forced the scratch of Bottle of Rouge, while stablemate Explora impressed with her final breeze ahead of Friday’s race.

The Grade 1-winning Bottle of Rouge developed a cough after completing a half-mile work in :48.78 alongside Forced Entry in the pre-dawn darkness. The filly, undefeated in 2026 with victories in the Sunland Oaks and Virginia Oaks, will miss the Oaks, reducing Baffert’s representation to Explora alone by 11 a.m.

Bottle of Rouge’s withdrawal promotes Lovely Grey from the also-eligible list into the field. The Kelsey Danner trainee, who finished second in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park, had been a $1,500 supplemental nominee before April’s deadline.

Nycon and Resist remain on the also-eligible list in that preference order, with until 9 a.m. Friday to potentially draw into the race.

Explora Shines in Final Work

Explora delivered the morning’s highlight performance, blazing five furlongs in :58.81 over a lightning-fast surface following the second renovation break. Working inside Winston Ave, the filly displayed impressive enthusiasm through her gallop-out while her workmate was allowed to coast.

“Awesome,” declared jockey Martin Garcia as the filly returned to the barn.

“She worked really well,” Baffert confirmed. “She needed to do something like that today.”

The performance reinforced Explora’s credentials heading into the Oaks. Perfect in the place spot through seven career starts, she last competed when capturing the Grade 3 Honeybee on March 1. A fever forced her withdrawal from the intended Grade 2 Fantasy prep, but four subsequent strong works have maintained her fitness.

Sunday’s breeze marked the completion of final serious preparations for all current Oaks participants, setting the stage for Friday’s $1.5 million contest.
