Burnham Square Handles New Surface, Masters Elkhorn Field

Lexington, Ky. — April 18, 2026.
Proving that class translates across surfaces, Burnham Square, last year’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1) hero on dirt, looked every bit as dominant in his first turf start Saturday, taking the Grade 2 $350,000 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland with the authority of a seasoned grass performer.

Under a patient ride from Flavien Prat for trainer Brad Cox, the 4‑year‑old son of Curlin sat perfectly placed behind the early leaders through an opening half of :49.26 in the 1½‑mile turf feature. When Prat angled him out at the top of the stretch, Burnham Square responded instantly, surging past the frontrunners and drawing clear to stop the clock in 2:28.72 on firm ground.

“We’ve had a feeling he’d handle the grass,” Cox said afterward. “He’s athletic and has always moved like a horse who’d love a little cut in the ground. He confirmed that today in a big way.”

Burnham Square gained separation quickly in mid‑stretch and was geared down late, winning by 2½ lengths over Bold Anthem, with Foreign Diplomatanother length back in third. Favored Tiberian flattened out to finish a non‑threatening fourth after pressing the pace.

A standout sophomore in 2025, Burnham Square returned to competition this year following a winter freshening at Fair Grounds. Saturday’s win raised his career total to five victories from ten starts and pushed earnings to just over $2.2 million for owner Juddmonte Farms.

Cox said future plans will depend on how the colt exits the race but noted that the G1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park in June would be a logical next step.

“He’s proven now that he’s not just a dirt horse,” the trainer added. “With that versatility, our options are wide open.”

For Keeneland fans, Burnham Square’s effortless transition to the grass was further proof that elite talent finds its footing anywhere.
