Derby and Oaks Contenders Shine in Friday Morning Drills at Churchill

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Churchill Downs came alive Friday morning ahead of Saturday’s opening day, with the 7:15-7:30 workout window reserved for Kentucky Derby and Oaks hopefuls producing a flurry of impressive moves. Four potential Derby starters and several Oaks candidates compressed their works into a rapid-fire five or six-minute span under balmy conditions over a lightning-fast track.

The morning’s headliners included Santa Anita Derby winner So Happy and Louisiana Derby victor Emerging Market, along with Gulfstream Park Oaks winner Prom Queen and Santa Anita Oaks heroine Meaning. Last year’s Derby champion Sovereignty was also among those utilizing the special training session.

Derby Division Works

So Happy opened the show with Mike Smith aboard, completing five furlongs in a workmanlike :35.46 and 1:00.38. The colt required steady encouragement from midstretch through the wire, galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.35. Despite never racing in blinkers, So Happy continues training and galloping with the equipment. His morning moves rarely dazzle—he’s the type who saves his best for race day.

Emerging Market turned in the morning’s most impressive Derby work, breezing four furlongs in :23.31 and :47.59 alongside 3-year-old maiden filly Hedge Book. With Flavien Prat up, the Louisiana Derby winner pulled well clear around the turn, cruising six furlongs in 1:13.69 while never asked for his best. His performances since arriving earlier this week continue to turn heads.

Wonder Dean finally showed some urgency, breaking from the six-furlong pole at a two-minute clip before completing his final five furlongs in 1:02. The colt was set down through his final quarter in approximately :24 to complete the drill.

Ocelli, still needing defections to crack the Derby field, breezed an easy half-mile in :23.66 and :48.08, galloping out five furlongs in 1:00.59 alongside 3-year-old maiden winner Hulkamania.

Oaks Division Dominates

The fillies stole the morning’s spotlight with a trio of spectacular moves. Bella Ballerina broke off two lengths behind workmate Diamond Eyed Jack, completing four furlongs in :47.09 before unleashing a powerful turn move. She drew off to finish three-quarters in 1:10.80 and seven furlongs in a sizzling 1:23.75 on David Grening’s watch. Her timing couldn’t be better.

Meaning produced equally impressive fractions after spotting Bella Ballerina’s team a length through the opening eighth. She cruised that fraction in :14.20 before blazing from the half-mile pole to the wire in :46 flat. Her gallop-out was exceptional, completing six furlongs from the half in 1:11.49. Few works get better than that.

Prom Queen waited until after the 9 a.m. renovation break, working over a surface churned up by a dozen previous workers. Breaking from the 4½-furlong marker, she covered five-eighths (finishing a sixteenth past the wire) in :37.52 and 1:00.44. Full of run around the clubhouse turn, she completed seven furlongs in 1:25.73.

Always a Runner, with new rider Jose Ortiz aboard, maintained fitness with a half-mile breeze in :24.09 and :48.66 alongside promising 3-year-old filly Leinani. Neither was asked for speed, cruising six furlongs in a solid 1:14.08.

Paradise, Prom Queen’s stablemate, worked four furlongs in :47.76 according to Grening. She’s expected to skip the Oaks for the Eight Belles.

Cox Duo Takes Different Approach

Trainer Brad Cox reversed his usual pattern with Derby contenders Commandment and Fulleffort during pre-dawn hours. Commandment galloped 1½ miles after jogging two miles Thursday, while Fulleffort jogged this morning following Thursday’s routine gallop.

The stage is set for Saturday’s opening day festivities, with these Derby and Oaks hopefuls demonstrating they’re ready for the challenges ahead on the first Saturday in May.
