Journalism Eyes Met Mile Following Solid Third in Oaklawn Handicap

After covering this sport for over two decades, I’ve learned that sometimes a defeat can reveal as much about a horse’s potential as a victory. That’s precisely the case with Journalism’s third-place effort in Saturday’s Grade 2, $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap.

Michael McCarthy reports that his charge emerged from the race in excellent condition and will now settle back into his routine at Santa Anita. For a horse making his seasonal debut against top-tier competition, that’s exactly what you want to hear the morning after.

The connections are already looking ahead, with the Metropolitan Mile under consideration for Journalism’s next start. It’s a logical target for a horse who has shown an affinity for one-turn miles throughout his career, including his victory in last year’s Preakness Stakes.

What’s particularly encouraging is McCarthy’s assessment of his horse’s condition post-race. In my experience, trainers are quick to point out any concerns after a tough effort, and the fact that Journalism came out of such a competitive race in “excellent condition” speaks volumes about his fitness and readiness for the campaign ahead.

The Oaklawn Handicap served its purpose as a prep, getting Journalism back into race rhythm after his winter break. Now, with that race under his belt and a return to his Santa Anita base, the son of Justify can build toward what promises to be an exciting summer campaign.

The Met Mile at Belmont would represent a significant test, but based on what we saw in Hot Springs and McCarthy’s positive report, Journalism appears ready to take on all comers in the division.
