Kentucky Derby Winner to Receive $3.1 Million from Record $5 Million Purse

The 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, will maintain its record-breaking $5 million total purse for the third consecutive year, with the winning connections set to take home $3.1 million along with the coveted gold trophy.

Churchill Downs significantly increased the Derby purse in 2024, jumping from $3 million to $5 million, bringing the Run for the Roses closer to the Breeders’ Cup Classic’s $7 million purse—North America’s richest race. The enhanced prize money remains unchanged for 2026.

Prize Money Distribution

Only the top five finishers will share in the $5 million purse, with payouts structured as follows:

  • 1st Place: $3,100,000
  • 2nd Place: $1,000,000
  • 3rd Place: $500,000
  • 4th Place: $250,000
  • 5th Place: $150,000

Jockey Compensation

The winning jockey typically receives 10% of the winner’s share, translating to approximately $310,000 for guiding the victorious horse across the finish line. Jockeys finishing fourth or worse will receive a minimum $500 riding fee according to 2026 Kentucky Derby rules.

The substantial purse increase reflects Churchill Downs’ commitment to maintaining the Kentucky Derby’s status as one of horse racing’s premier events, ensuring it remains competitive with other major international races while rewarding the connections of horses competing at the highest level of the sport.
