Preakness Veterans Renew Campaigns in Wide-Open Ohio Derby
The road beyond the Triple Crown often reveals which 3-year-olds are ready to take the next step, and Saturday’s $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) at Thistledown offers another important checkpoint for a group of sophomores looking to establish themselves during the summer season.
Several runners exiting the Preakness Stakes (G1) will return to action in the 1 1/8-mile Ohio Derby, where they’ll face a fresh set of challengers led by Desert Gate and Albus. The Grade 3 event has attracted a competitive field and once again serves as one of the Midwest’s premier tests for developing 3-year-olds.

Chip Honcho enters as one of the more accomplished runners in the lineup. Ocelli also returns after gaining valuable experience in classic company. The colt has repeatedly shown determination against strong opposition and remains eligible to take another step forward as the distances and competition continue to evolve during the summer campaign.
Bull by the Horns arrives with a profile that suggests improvement remains possible. While his Preakness effort did not produce a breakthrough performance, his earlier form demonstrated enough ability to warrant respect against this group.
Robusta likewise exits the Preakness looking for a rebound. The colt flashed talent earlier this year and will attempt to rediscover the form that made him a noteworthy player on the Derby trail.
Standing in their way are several fresh rivals who bypassed the Triple Crown grind. Desert Gate figures prominently among that group after showing steady development throughout the season. The colt enters with the advantage of additional rest and the opportunity to capitalize against rivals making quick returns from demanding assignments.
Albus also adds intrigue to the field. His recent performances have positioned him as a legitimate contender, and he enters the Ohio Derby as one of the newer faces capable of making an impact against more established names.
The field is further strengthened by Trendsetter and other emerging sophomores, giving the race a balanced mix of proven stakes performers and improving newcomers.
