Tawny Port Delivers Stamina Showcase in Belmont Gold Cup
Few horses in training are as battle-tested over marathon distances as Tawny Port, and on Thursday at Saratoga Race Course the veteran campaigner reminded everyone exactly why.
The 7-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile turned in a powerful late-running performance to capture the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup, drawing clear in the stretch to score by 2 1/2 lengths in the $250,000 turf fixture contested over two miles. The victory not only ended a lengthy drought in the winner’s circle but also secured a coveted “Golden Ticket” into the Group 1 Melbourne Cup in Australia later this year.
Ridden patiently by Flavien Prat, Tawny Port settled comfortably off the pace while Corruption showed the way through the early stages of the marathon. Prat kept his mount relaxed throughout the opening mile, content to let the race develop before asking for serious run entering the final quarter-mile.
When called upon, Tawny Port responded with authority.
Sweeping into contention approaching the stretch, he seized control near the eighth pole and steadily widened his advantage to the wire. Navy Seal (IRE) completed the exacta, while Miztertonic finished third. The heavily regarded Corruption, sent off as the favorite, faded to fifth after setting the pace.
The win marked Tawny Port’s first victory since taking Saratoga’s John’s Call Stakes in August 2023, snapping a 17-race winless streak. Trainer Miguel Clement was understandably pleased to see the veteran finally earn another major success, particularly after the disappointment of last year’s Belmont Gold Cup.
In 2025, weather forced the race off the turf and onto a sloppy main track at a shorter distance. Tawny Port never handled those conditions and finished far behind the winner, Parchment Party. With the race remaining on grass this time around, the outcome was dramatically different.
Clement noted that Saratoga has consistently brought out the best in Tawny Port, and the gelding once again rewarded that confidence with a performance that highlighted both his stamina and professionalism.
For Prat, whose European background provided plenty of experience in extended-distance races, the key was allowing the horse to find his rhythm early and conserve energy for the demanding final stages.
The winning time for the two-mile test was 3:17.75. Tawny Port returned $6.90 to win as the second choice in the wagering.
Now the conversation turns to Australia.
With the Belmont Gold Cup serving as a designated Melbourne Cup qualifier, Tawny Port has earned automatic entry into one of the world’s most prestigious staying events. Clement acknowledged that a trip Down Under is under serious consideration, despite the logistical challenges presented by the proximity of the Breeders’ Cup.
Whether or not the veteran ultimately makes the journey, his Belmont Gold Cup triumph provided one of the most satisfying stories of the Saratoga meet so far—a hard-knocking runner finally rewarded after a long stretch of near misses and tough luck.
On Thursday afternoon, over a distance that demands both endurance and determination, Tawny Port proved he still has plenty left in the tank.
