Quills Picks Winners – Monday 5/18 – Parx Race 9

We head home to Parx for today’s featured race. Our race is race nine of a ten-race card. A field of eight horses will go one mile and 70 yards in this allowance test.

Parx Race 9 – Allowance

Favored in today’s QPW race is the 7 Who’s the King (2/1 morning line). He likes to be on the lead, and that is the only way that he knows to run. Last time out he tired in the one-turn mile at Laurel Park but did win two races back at Parx going a mile. With this field today, he looks like a strong gate to wire candidate.

The fly in the ointment may be the 5 Freedom’s Echo (10/1 ML). He went from a maiden claiming win at Parx to take on horses on the road to the Kentucky Derby in January in the Jerome Stakes. He returns here today after a four-month layoff. He did bobble in the middle of the race which may or may not have caused him to finish last in a short field of four. But he does return here with probably a more suitable class of horses today.

The 2 Devil’s Cay (6/1 ML) won at the Preakness distance in a claiming race here two weeks ago. He stalked the pace and took over late to win that near marathon distance. If he can settle behind the leaders early, he may have a chance for new connections after being claimed last time out.

The 1 Profound (5/1 ML) settled at Keeneland last month and gave up a lead late in a claiming race where he was claimed. That was his first race on dirt and ran well in that race. Look for a similar effort and possibly not fading late in this race today.

Joe’s Pick

I highly doubt that we will get 5/1 odds with seeing “Kee” in the program. Profound did not appear to tire in the race, but the winner got a second wind and got by Profound late. I think that race will help him with this scenery change and should get up late for the win today.

I’m calling this race 1-7-2-5 and my play is $20 to win on the 1. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
