Quills Picks Winners – Sunday 5/17 – Woodbine Race 8
After spending the Preakness yesterday in Maryland, we head north of the border to Woodbine for today’s race of the day. Our race today is the King Corrie Stakes. Three-year-olds will race seven furlongs on their main Tapeta track. Seven horses are entered in today’s featured race.

Woodbine Race 8 – King Corrie Stakes
Favored in the King Corrie Stakes is the 5 Casson (2/1 morning line). He made his 2026 debut at Gulfstream Park, rallying late but finishing fourth in the Texas Glitter Stakes. He returns to familiar grounds where he won his two career races. He appears to want to settle and make a big move but I would not be surprised if he is closer to the front.
The 4 Rude Procedure (5/2 ML) comes in from the Fair Grounds where he had no rally in an optional claiming sprint race. Like the aforementioned Mark Casse trainee, this colt broke his maiden in his debut race last year here at Woodbine. He may not be too far back of the lead as well.
The 2 Fire and Wine (3/1 ML) returns after last winning the Coronation Futurity at Woodbine last November. He appears to be horse that likes to run on the front end, especially in two turn races. But this is only a seven-furlong race and appears to be a potential first time to prepare for the Canadian Triple Crown later this summer.
The 6 Highwaytothemoon (8/1 ML) won an optional claiming race here at Woodbine last month. He has a race over the track this year already and will look to start from this outside post this afternoon.

Joe’s Pick
Mark Casse has a tough one-two punch here this afternoon, but I think Fire and Wine is starting here today in this race with a purpose. I think he started to figure things out as the races got longer and as a horse that was bred in Canada, might be a name to mention when we get to the King’s Plate later this summer.
I’m calling this race 2-5-4-6 and my play is $20 to win on the 2. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
