Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 7/28 – Assiniboia Downs Race 6

We head north of the border like we have during the summer season here which means we head to Assiniboia Downs for some night racing. Our feature tonight is a claiming race for fillies and mares going six furlongs.

Eight fillies and mares are entered in tonight’s race which is restricted to horses that have never won three races lifetime. This is a common condition at race tracks across North America. Let’s see what this race has in store for us this evening.

Assiniboia Downs Race 6 – Claiming

Favored in tonight’s race is the 3 Steal Your Soul (9/5 morning line). She got up late to get second to a runaway winner in the Jack Hardy Stakes here two weeks ago. She shortens up which may help her this evening. This filly should be closer to the pace tonight as she drops in for the claiming tag.

The 3 Starship Paradise (3/1 ML) tired in an optional claiming race here at Assiniboia at the beginning of the month. She also drops for a tag here today while shortening up here this evening. She should be close to the pace as well and not that far away from the morning line favorite.

The 6 Mineral Rights (10/1 ML) showed nothing in an optional claiming race here at the beginning of the month. In her previous race under these same race conditions, she made a wide move on the turn and missed by less than a length. She should be able to at least hit the board if she can replicate that June race this evening.

The 8 Apple Fest (4/1 ML) draws the outside post tonight and may attempt to go gate to wire here. This is her second race of the year after not racing for nine months so she definitely needed that race. The issue is that she was tiring last year trying to gun to the front, but she is in for a tag for the first time in two years.

I admit that this could go a million ways here since there is no clear speed horse in this race. In the end, I think the favorite dropping in class is way too strong here. Steal Your Soul gets the class relief to get the job done here this evening, but she will be challenged late by Starship Paradise and Mineral Rights.
