Impractical Finishes Third at the Fair Grounds

On Saturday at Fair Grounds Race Course, Impractical turned in a strong third-place finish in a 6-furlong Maiden Special Weight on the dirt for trainer Whit Beckman.

Coming off a four-month layoff—and with a few positive changes along the way—Impractical delivered a much-improved performance and gave us plenty to be encouraged about.

He broke alertly from the gate and was squeezed early between rivals, but handled the contact well and quickly established himself on the lead. He showed good natural speed, setting the pace through an opening quarter in :22.06.

Continuing on the front end, he maintained his rhythm through a half in :45.67 and showed determination turning for home. In the stretch, Not to Worry made a sweeping move from the outside to get up for the win, followed by Mo the Merrier, with Impractical holding on gamely for third.

Jockey Axcel Concepcion gave him a textbook ride, putting him in a strong, forward position and allowing him to run with confidence throughout. While it wasn’t a win, this was a clear step forward and a much more complete effort from the colt.

On Sunday morning, Beckman reported that Impractical came out of the race in good order, and the barn is set to ship to Keeneland Race Course early this week.

Looking ahead, this sprint division appears to suit him well, and with the depth of races available, we expect to have strong options in the coming weeks. Sprint horses also tend to recover more quickly, allowing for a shorter turnaround between starts.

Key Takeaways

  • Broke sharply and handled early pressure well
  • Showed natural early speed and set the pace
  • Stayed competitive throughout and fought on gamely
  • Clear step forward off the layoff

Final Thoughts

This was an encouraging return and a performance we can build on. Impractical showed more professionalism, confidence, and competitiveness from start to finish. With this race under his belt, we’re excited to see him take the next step—hopefully getting back to the races at Keeneland and continuing his upward progression.
