Keepsake Box Finishes Ninth at Gulfstream

On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, Keepsake Box finished ninth in a 1-mile and 70-yard Maiden Special Weight over the Tapeta for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. The race was originally at 7 ½-furlongs on the turf, but moved off the grass and stretched out.

Breaking sharply from the gate, Keepsake Box showed good early intent and quickly established position in the two-path, settling just off the leaders. She tracked the pace nicely through an opening quarter in :23.14, sitting second, and continued comfortably down the backstretch as the half went in :46.86. Approaching the far turn, she remained well within striking range, narrowing the margin to within a half-length of the leader through three-quarters in 1:11.38.

At that point, it appeared she had every chance to make a move. However, turning for home, she was unable to quicken with the field and began to tire, ultimately fading to finish ninth, 18 ½ lengths behind the winner. The final time was 1:39.51.

Key Takeaways

  • Broke sharply and showed early speed
  • Stalked the pace effectively through the opening half-mile
  • Was in a competitive position approaching the far turn
  • Flattened out late and was unable to sustain her run

Final Thoughts

While the result was disappointing, the race offered useful insight. Keepsake Box showed improved early positioning and was more engaged through the first half of the race, which is a step forward. However, she was unable to carry that effort through the stretch, suggesting that both distance and overall race setup played a role.

Following the race, she returned in good order, and the team does not plan to run her back on the Tapeta surface.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on placing her in a spot where she can be more competitive. That may mean a step into more suitable company and potentially exploring options beyond Gulfstream to find the right conditions. As always, our priority is to give her the best opportunity to succeed, and we’ll share an updated plan as it develops.
