Quills Picks Winners – Sunday 5/10 – Santa Anita Race 9

We close out another week here at Q & A Racing with a trip out west for the finale at Santa Anita. The final race on a nine-race card is the Siren Lure Stakes as horses will go six furlongs on the turf course.

A field of eleven horses are entered, but with the rail out 20 feet, at the most 10 horses will run in the race that will start in the newer turf chute.

Santa Anita Race 9 – Siren Lure Stakes

Favored in our featured race this afternoon is the 1 Sorrento Sky (5/2 morning line). He tried to rally in the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes but could not rally in March. He returns here today going from the hillside course to the newer chute where he has shown that he can close. Look for him to be involved late here in the finale.

The 6 Unconquerable Keen (3/1 ML) returns after clipping heals in the Gulfstream Park sprint in January and losing the rider in deep stretch. He returns today back at home looking to show the form he has shown in California. Look for him to be closing strongly late, as he did in the Stormy Liberal Stakes two races back at Del Mar last November.

The 9 Boss Sully (5/1 ML) returns after a dull performance last August at Del Mar in the Green Flash Handicap. He likes to be on or close to the lead, but he will have company from the stall directly from the left in the 8 Virat (8/1 ML).

The 5 Friendly Confines (12/1 ML) shortens up after finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Mathis Mile back in December. He won his only turf sprint, which was a six and a half furlong maiden breaker. He looks like with the cutback that he may be stalking the pace here this afternoon which may not be a bad thing with the speed on the outside.

Joe’s Pick

It does look like here that there will be enough speed that the stalkers and closers will have an opportunity to make their presence known late. Unconquerable Keen wasn’t going to win last time out, but he did clip heels late. He also has run well fresh in the past and should get up late for the win over Friendly Confines.

I’m calling this race 6-5-1-9 and my play is $20 to win on the 6. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
