Quills Picks Winners – Thursday 5/21 – Churchill Downs Race 6

Quills Picks Winners – Thursday 5/21 – Churchill Downs Race 6

I admit that sometimes when I have a “twilight track” or a track that runs at night, I have even less motivation to write my article the night before. Also, with rain hitting the eastern half of the country, I was a bit hesitant with this race today.

But as of noon Eastern time, it appears this race will be run on the turf, and the turf is listed as firm. So as I result, we will look at race six on an eight-race Twilight Thursday card at Churchill Downs. In our featured race, we have a field of nine horses going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf course.

Churchill Downs Race 6 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in today’s featured race is the 3 Ole Crazy Bone (7/2 morning line). He races for the first time since September at Kentucky Downs, winning the Grade 2 Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational at Kentucky Downs. He shortens up for his 2026 debut and will be closing late like he did in September when he drew off to win by almost four lengths.

The 8 Lambeth (5/1 ML) races for the first time since October when he showed nothing on the main track in the Grade 3 Fayette Stakes. He did win a handicap rate at Kentucky Downs at the end of August going a mile, so this race may help him in his debut. He has run well on dirt, but he can hold his own on the turf as well.

The 4 Anglophile (10/1 ML) should get some targets to close into late in tonight’s race. He won an allowance race in his first race in six months at Keeneland. He may only be 3 for 26 lifetime, but he has a strong closing kick that can get him to the wire first with this group today.

The 9 Flying Mohawk (8/1 ML) closed well in winning an allowance, defeating Anglophile. Jayson Werth’s horses won two of his last three races and should be closing late here again today.

Joe’s Pick

If this race is taken off the turf, my pick is Lambeth. He has the best form on the main track from what I can see. But since this appears to be staying on the turf, let’s go for a longshot after yesterday’s win with a favorite in a short field at Delaware Park.

I’m taking Anglophile. There are a few horses that will go for the front that I did not mention in this article. This will leave it for Anglophile and Ole Crazy Bone. I’ll look to help the ROI here today with Anglophile in the sixth race today at Churchill, weather permitting.

I’m calling this race 4-3-9-8 and my play is $20 to win on the 4. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
