Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 6/9 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5

After a day at home, we head to the Great White North and Assiniboia Downs for tonight’s race of the day. Our featured race is the fifth of seven races on tonight’s card. Race five is an optional claiming race going five and a half furlongs. Seven fillies and mares are entered in this test.

Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in tonight’s race is the 2 I’m in Control (2/1 morning line). She won her AsD debut last month when she pressured the early leader and took over while outside. She drew off to an impressive win. This distance appears to be in her sweet spot as her best races have been between tonight’s distance and six and a half furlongs.

The 7 Smoocherro was close to the pace in her Assiniboia Downs debut but was unable to keep up with the winner late. That winner won again last week. Look for her to pressure the front from that outside post.

The 5 Mystic Song (6/1 ML) won her AsD debut as well, winning a claiming race two weeks ago. She pressed the pace while three-wide and drew off for the win. She is four for five lifetime and appears to have made the transition from the synthetic at Woodbine to the dirt here at Assiniboia.

The 1 Sumitup (10/1 ML) races for the first time in 2026 and appears to be the speed in the race. It also helps here that she has the rail. She probably will need a race but she might be pressured this evening and falter late.

Joe’s Pick

This could end up being an interesting race with fillies and mares here who are looking to extend winning streaks. I’m in Control could have the same exact trip and take over late, but I am impressed the most with Mystic Song. I admit that I am a sucker for horses that know how to win and it appears she does. Let’s take her in a bit of an upset.
