Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 8/4 – Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 5

We are doing a minor switcharoo this week. Usually, today is the day that we have focused on Assiniboia Downs. But today we are going to take a race from Horseshoe Indianapolis after taking last night’s Manitoba Derby at AsD.

We will look at race five on a ten-race program. Today’s race is an allowance race going a mile and a sixteenth on the main track. A field of nine will head to the gate this afternoon.

Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 9 – Allowance

Favored in today’s race is the 7 He’s Late Again (5/2 morning line). He races for the first time in two months after finishing second in an allowance race here at Horseshoe Indy. He was closer to the pace in June but has closed from further back.

The 1 Chillax (3/1 ML) finished second at Saratoga last month to runaway winner McAfee in an allowance race. That is important to note because of the races he ran in and the hype he had. But Chillax can close and should be able to run well here today after that trip to Saratoga.

The 6 Palm Tree (7/2 ML) goes turf to dirt for today’s race. Don’t be misled that he is a turf horse. Though he has run mostly on turf, he ran well in two races at Oaklawn in the spring. If those two races are an indication, he will be close to the pace here this afternoon.

The 3 Fountain Lake (10/1 ML) made a move on the grass at Ellis Park but still finished off the board. He will go turf to dirt here as he returns to Horseshoe Indy today. Look for an improved effort here this afternoon as he is third race off of the layoff as well as going from turf to dirt for today’s race.

Joe’s Pick

There is no obvious speed in today’s race so it will be interesting to see who inherits the front today. It is possible that Chillax, who is shortening up after two longer races at Churchill Downs and Saratoga, could take advantage of drawing the rail today and go for the lead. There will be challenges in the end from Fountain Lake, Palm Tree and He’s Late Again, but I think Chillax gets the job done this afternoon.

I’m calling this race 1-6-7-3 and my play is $20 to win on the 1. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
