Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 9/8 – Assiniboia Downs Race 6

After a win yesterday at Kentucky Downs on Labor Day, we head back north of the border for our usual Tuesday stop. We head up to Winnipeg and Assiniboia Downs for today’s race of the day.

We take a look at race six of an eight-race card. A field of seven horses will go one mile in an allowance race for horses that have never won two races lifetime.

Assiniboia Downs Race 6 – Allowance

Favored in tonight’s race is the 2 Don’t Fire Joe (9/5 morning line). He comes north after last racing in June at Churchill Downs where he finished third. He changes barns and gets a change of scenery. Look for him to make a late move like he has done in his last couple of races.

The 5 Charlie’s Prize (3/1 ML) broke his maiden three weeks ago here at Assiniboia Downs where he stalked while wide and drew off to an easy win. He was close the last three times here at AsD and should benefit once again from going a mile tonight.

The 3 Ride At Dawn (10/1 ML) makes his first appearance at Assiniboia after racing at Century Mile in Edmonton two weeks ago. He had a mild bid sprinting but he might be a horse that may be a route horse.

The 7 Acquire (4/1 ML) stretches out after finishing a troubled fourth two weeks ago here at Assiniboia. He finished well despite steadying on the final turn, but he was never going to get to the winner even if he had a clean trip.

Joe’s Pick

Don’t Fire Joe has a class edge here having faced foes at Gulfstream Park and Churchill, and he also had time to acclimate to the Canadian track environment. But I think he is still beatable here.

I think the 6 Areunotentertained (15/1 ML) will gun for the lead in his first attempt going two turns. Charlie’s Prize will get the perfect stalking trip and will have first opportunity to take over, which should be the winning move here  this evening.
