Quills Picks Winners – Wednesday 10/7 – Assiniboia Downs Race 7
It is closing night tonight at Assiniboia Downs and everything must go. Anything that had a carryover must be paid out, and for me that means I have to make one last pick this evening.
Tonight’s featured race is race seven of an eight-race card. A field of eight horses will go seven and a half furlongs in an optional claiming race. Get the coffee out, because it could be a late night for some of our readers tonight.
Assiniboia Downs Race 7 – Allowance Optional Claiming
Favored in the closing night feature is the 2 Jacks Spring Break (9/5 morning line). He shortens up after he stalked dueling leaders and just missed by a head two weeks ago. This veteran gelding has run well from both on or near the lead or from further back. No matter where he is positioned early on tonight, he should be up there at the end.
The 4 Makena’s Joy (2/1 ML) won two weeks ago here at Assiniboia closing from the back of the pack in a claiming race and winning by four lengths. He steps up into allowance company for his 2026 AsD swan song and should be closing from the back of the pack this evening.
The 7 Omaha Warrior (6/1 ML) dueled early on in an optional claiming race and tired. He usually stalks a few lengths behind the leaders but was on the lead two weeks ago. I’m expecting this gelding to stalk this evening for his best chance on winning tonight.
The 6 Mr Jaws (4/1 ML) is the speed of this race and will try to take this field wire to wire today. He was part of that three-way speed duel with Omaha Warrior and won that battle but lost the war of the race in the final strides. If he is alone on the lead early on, he can take this field gate to wire tonight.

We do have two strong closers, but I think that Mr Jaws has the ability to go gate to wire here tonight. I think if the pace can be slowed down enough, he neutralizes the closers and wins.
