Horseshoe Indianapolis Race 9 – Maiden Special Weight

Favored in today’s race is the 3 Raspberry (5/2 morning line). She goes turf to dirt after showing nothing at the Fair Grounds in March. She even attempted to take on some Kentucky Oaks hopefuls last November to no avail. This filly does look like she wants to sprint and the turf to dirt angle should help.

The 1 Jendini (4/1 ML) ran well in her debut at Turfway Park and will take a regular dirt surface for the first time this afternoon. She faced a runaway winner but just missed second. This filly could be a candidate for a big race today.

The 5 Acostambo (10/1 ML) finished second in her debut here last week. She was closing some late and did have to check when the winner did veer inward near the end of the race. It was somewhat significant that she had to check up, but she was not winning the race. That experience should help her this afternoon.

The 8 Lilbitofsugar (9/2 ML) debuts today for a trainer who a trainer with limited data has won 30% of the time with first time starters. Granted, the data size is 10 entries, but it’s still an impressive number. This filly worked consistently at Turfway Park and here in Indy consistently for her debut which is a good sign to me. Look for her to be ready to run today.

Joe’s Pick

I think Raspberry’s race this afternoon will determine greatly on what they do with her. She ran well at seven furlongs at Churchill last fall and did not fare well in the Golden Rod in November. I don’t think she wanted the turf at all and this race was to try to get her back closer to the front.

But I will try to beat her this afternoon with Acostambo. Yes, she did have to check late, but she wasn’t winning the race. If she was going to win that, she shouldn’t be here because the winner would have been disqualified. I don’t think you will get close to the 10/1 odds today, but if you know from my articles, sometimes these pics are for the ROI or win percentage. I think wagering on this race will make it look like a win percentage pick for yours truly.

I’m calling this race 5-1-3-8 and my play is $20 to win on the 5. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
