Renegade, Commandment Lead Equibase Rankings Among Kentucky Derby Contenders
Lexington, Ky. — April 17, 2026.
As the Kentucky Derby (G1) approaches, the latest Equibase speed figures have spotlighted two horses at the top of the 3-year-old division — Renegade and Commandment — both of whom earned standout numbers in key final prep victories this spring.
The weekly statistical review, The Road: Presented by Gainesway and WinStar Farm, highlighted Renegade’s explosive 113 Equibase Speed Figure for his win in the GI Arkansas Derby, a mark that now stands as the highest of any U.S.-based Derby hopeful. Running for trainer Todd Pletcher, the son of Into Mischief swept to victory at Oaklawn Park in commanding style, reinforcing his position as the race’s likely morning-line favorite.
Hot on his heels, Commandment, trained by Brad Cox, registered a 111 Equibase figure for his front-running success in the GI Florida Derby, cementing his reputation as one of the most consistent sophomores on the trail. The colt’s ability to carry speed over a route of ground has made him a major player as attention turns to Churchill Downs.
Rounding out the top tier of pre-Derby ratings are several familiar names:
- Further Ado, winner of the GI Blue Grass Stakes, who earned an Equibase figure of 108,
- So Happy, victorious in the GI Santa Anita Derby, with a 107, and
- Albus, who secured the GII Wood Memorial with a 106.
These figures, derived from Equibase’s comprehensive performance-adjusted timing model, measure the quality of each effort relative to pace, class, and track conditions—providing a standardized snapshot of where the leading contenders stand two weeks out from the Derby.
Data analysts noted that both Renegade and Commandment have demonstrated consistency across multiple graded races, an indicator that could be pivotal over 1¼ miles on Derby Day. Their relatively close speed figures suggest a competitive showdown when the gates open beneath the Twin Spires on May 2.
Meanwhile, horses sitting just outside the top five include The Puma (104) and Chief Wallabee (103), each with enough résumé strength to threaten the leaders should pace or conditions shift in their favor.
As Derby week nears, all eyes remain on the Equibase chart—where Renegade and Commandment have already separated themselves as the figures to beat.
