Sovereignty, Journalism Set for Blockbuster Showdown in Oaklawn Handicap
Hot Springs, Ark. — April 18, 2026.
The Grade 2, $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap will deliver one of the most anticipated matchups of the season Saturday, bringing together two of racing’s brightest 4-year-old stars — Sovereignty, the reigning Horse of the Year, and Journalism, last season’s Preakness Stakes hero — in a six-horse field brimming with quality.
Both horses launch their 2026 campaigns in the storied 1⅛‑mile race, which has long served as a proving ground for older dirt specialists. Adding even more intrigue, they’ll face the formidable White Abarrio, a multiple Grade 1 winner who captured the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic and represents the top echelon of seasoned rivals.
For fans of championship-caliber racing, it’s a rare scene: Sovereignty and Journalism renewing their rivalry where it all began — in open competition at the highest level.
Horse of the Year Returns
Trained by Todd Pletcher for WinStar Farm, Sovereignty dominated his 3-year-old campaign, sweeping the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes (G1) and sealing year-end honors as 2025 Horse of the Year. The Into Mischief colt has been training forwardly at Palm Beach Downs and ships to Oaklawn in razor-sharp form.
“He’s matured even more since last fall,” Pletcher said earlier this week. “This is the right kind of spot to get him started — a strong field, a fair surface, and a chance to set the tone for the season.”
Sovereignty will break from post 3 under Irad Ortiz Jr., with morning-line odds listed at 8-5.
Journalism Seeking Third Time Lucky
Journalism, conditioned by Michael McCarthy for Wertheimer et Frere, is a two-time classic winner himself, having taken last year’s Preakness Stakes (G1)before finishing strongly in the Travers (G1). While Sovereignty got the better of him in two prior meetings, McCarthy believes Oaklawn’s configuration could turn the tables.
“He loves a track that lets him settle and make that one sustained run,” McCarthy said. “The long stretch here plays into his hands.”
The Curlin colt arrives off a series of crisp works at Santa Anita, including a five-furlong breeze in 1:00 flat, and drew post 5 with Flavien Prat aboard at 2-1.
Proven Star Among the Veterans
Standing between them and victory is White Abarrio, trained by Rick Dutrow Jr., who captured the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic and remains one of North America’s premier older horses. His consistency over nine furlongs could make him the spoiler in this heavyweight clash.
The rest of the lineup includes Speed Runner, Rock Justice, and Bold Meridian, all seeking to make the most of the opportunity behind the headliners.
A Classic-Level Showdown
With Horse of the Year Sovereignty and Triple Crown standout Journalism squaring off against a world-class opponent in White Abarrio, Saturday’s Oaklawn Handicap promises championship intensity and genuine star power — the kind of renewal that evokes the race’s storied past.
Post time for the Oaklawn Handicap (G2)is 5:52 p.m. CT, anchoring a stakes-rich card that underscores Oaklawn’s growing reputation as one of America’s premier spring stages.
