Rispoli Nears Return After Grueling Recovery From Gulfstream Spill
For the first time in nearly five months, there is a finish line in sight for Umberto Rispoli.
The popular Italian jockey, sidelined since a devastating spill at Gulfstream Park in January, has begun the final stages of a comeback that at times tested both his physical and mental limits. After months of surgeries, rehabilitation, and relentless therapy, Rispoli is once again aboard horses and targeting a return to race riding later this summer.
Few riders on the North American circuit entered 2026 with more momentum. Rispoli had firmly established himself among the nation’s elite jockeys, building on a career highlighted by his victory aboard Journalism in the 2025 Preakness Stakes. That momentum came to an abrupt halt Jan. 24 when he was unseated from Unconquerable Keen during the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint on the Pegasus World Cup undercard.
The accident left Rispoli with significant injuries to his ankle and lower leg, including fractures that ultimately required multiple surgeries. What followed was a lengthy rehabilitation process that proved to be the most challenging recovery of his career.
Throughout the spring, Rispoli focused on rebuilding strength and mobility in the injured leg. Physical therapy became a full-time commitment, with daily sessions designed to restore flexibility and stability to an ankle that absorbs tremendous stress during a race. Progress was gradual, but the veteran rider continued to push forward despite the inevitable setbacks that accompany a major injury.
Recent developments have provided the strongest indication yet that a return is close. Rispoli has resumed riding horses in training and received medical clearance to continue increasing his workload. While acknowledging there is still conditioning work ahead, he has reported feeling comfortable in the saddle and encouraged by the progress made over the past several weeks.
The road back has been as much mental as physical. Riders are accustomed to pain and injury, but the severity of this setback forced Rispoli to confront uncertainty about when—or even if—he would return to the level that made him one of the most sought-after jockeys in the country. That determination, along with support from family, friends, and medical specialists, helped carry him through the most difficult stages of rehabilitation.
Now the focus shifts from recovery to readiness.
Rispoli plans to spend the coming weeks building fitness through morning workouts, continued therapy, and extensive time on horseback. His goal is not simply to return, but to return at full strength and be prepared for the demanding summer schedule that includes major racing opportunities at tracks such as Churchill Downs, Saratoga, and Del Mar.
For owners, trainers, and racing fans, the impending comeback is welcome news. Rispoli’s aggressive yet polished riding style has made him a fixture in major stakes races across the country, and his absence has been felt throughout the sport.
If the final stages of rehabilitation proceed as planned, one of racing’s most recognizable riders will soon be back where he belongs—competing at the highest level and looking to make up for lost time.
