Quills Picks Winners – Friday 7/24 – Del Mar Race 7

Quills Picks Winners – Friday 7/24 – Del Mar Race 7

I thought I would mix things up today. We are going to be heavy on Saratoga until Labor Day, including a few shows in the near future on Also Eligible.  Since we will be featuring Del Mar tomorrow with Saratoga, I thought we’d shift gears and head to “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” for today’s race of the day.

Our race is race seven of a nine-race card. Today’s race is the Fleet Treat Stakes, which is a race for California bred or sired three-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the main track. A full field of 12 horses are entered in our race this afternoon.

Del Mar Race 7 – Fleet Treat Stakes

Favored in the Fleet Treat is the 8 Mohaven (8/5 morning line). She shortens up after winning the Melair Stakes at Santa Anita in May. Her best races have been on the lead and will need to get to the front here today.

The 11 Liberation (8/1 ML) won the Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos going a mile back in December. She returns today for a trainer who does very well with horses coming back with 90 day or longer layoffs. She can be on the lead, but She might be pressuring the favorite down the backstretch.

The 6 She’s So Quaint (3/1 ML) won an optional claiming sprint race on the grass at Santa Anita last month and will head to the main track for the first time. If she can take to the main track today she might be able to bring some versatility to her profile today. I’m expecting her to sit right behind the leaders today.

The 5 Troisieme Etoile (10/1 ML) appears to be the closer in this race. She closed strongly to win an optional claiming race at Los Al on the 4th of July. She did not fair well against some of these entered in May, but she is sprinting here today. If things go crazy up front, she can pick up the pieces late.

Joe’s Pick

I’m trying to find a way to beat Mohaven here today, but I can’t do it. There is some speed in this race, but I don’t think she can be caught. If she gets the lead fairly easily, everyone is running for second.

I’m calling this race 8-5-11-6 and my play is $20 to win on the 8.
