Quills Picks Winners – Monday 8/31 – Finger Lakes Race 7

I decided to really switch things up today. I got behind a little bit last night and this morning, so I went to my emergency track for this afternoon. We will take a look at race 7 from Finger Lakes. This race is for New York-bred horses going five and a half furlongs. A field of eight is entered in the penultimate race of the day there.

Finger Lakes Race 7 – Allowance

Favored in today’s race is the 7 Apollo Code (5/2 morning line). He goes to Finger Lakes after tiring in a starter allowance at Saratoga. He did fit well with New York breds at Aqueduct and Saratoga so that last race may just be a clunker that comes up from time to time. But he should find this as a drop in class as he returns to Finger Lakes for the first time since last fall.

The 2 Stars N Stones (7/2 ML) finished well in an allowance race two weeks ago here at Finger Lakes, but he could not get to the winner. He has been near the pace and should be doing that again today with the advantageous post today.

The 5 Sir Kartrite (5/1 ML) broke slow at the beginning of the month here against open allowance company and finished fourth behind a runaway winner. He has shown that he can stalk the pace and can close from further back. That versatility may be big in this allowance race today.

The 8 Swift Bank (15/1 ML) has speed from the outside here and has won the last two races in claiming company here at Finger Lakes, including a gate to wire win two weeks ago. If he does not get to the lead with a speed horse on the rail, he could be at the hip of the inside horses going into the turn. But can he handle the step up in class?

We should be seeing some speed from the inside from the 1 Two Thirty A.M., and I think Stars N Stones goes with him. This sets up nicely for the favorite Apollo Code and Sir Kartrite. I think facing tougher at Saratoga and Aqueduct helps Apollo Code get the win here this afternoon.
