Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 9/1 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5

We start the new month north of the border like we have in the summer months with racing at Assiniboia Downs. Tonight, we have a field of eight horses going six furlongs in an optional claiming race.

Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in tonight’s featured race is the 3 Prime Suspect (9/5 morning line). He shortened up to six furlongs two weeks ago and drew off to win. This appears to be a gelding who may be better suited to sprinting despite the pedigree screaming that he will do well going long. He should be near the pace this evening.

The 7 Ceepeegee (5/2 ML) was near the pace last month here at Assiniboia Downs and had the lead in the stretch after a rail trip and was caught by the closers. He has an outside post this evening and could be hung wide on the turn.

The 6 Calming Force (12/1 ML) shortens from seven furlongs to six tonight, which means here at Assiniboia, he going from a two-turn race to a one-turn race. He has run well in those races and should shock at a nice price with a closing move tonight.

The 5 Factory Drive (15/1 ML) did not fire in his AsD debut but has run well elsewhere. He probably needed that race thought it technically was not a layoff in Daily Racing Form terms but he does have that race over the track. If he can stalk behind the leaders like he did at Wyoming Downs two back, he can pull off a shocker.

I admit that I like a longshot tonight. I’m going to go with Calming Force tonight. With the speed up front, he should be able to close at a big price to shock everyone tonight.
