Quills Picks Winners – Sunday 7/19 – Woodbine Race 10
We head north of the border where we hope the smoke has dissipated like it has here in the Mid-Atlantic area as Woodbine has some big races this afternoon. We will look at their biggest race of the day, the Woodbine Oaks for three-year-old fillies going a mile and an eighth.
This race in past years has been a prep for the King’s Plate, the first race of Canada’s Triple Crown series. Though the American Triple Crown Series has not had a filly challenge the boys in recent years, it is more commonplace north of the border. So it is very possible that we could see a filly or two from this race taking on the boys on August 15, which we will cover on Also Eligible.
But until then we will look at what can be considered a King’s Plate prep race.

Woodbine Race 10 – Woodbine Oaks
Favored in today’s race is the 7 Luster (6/5 morning line). She won the Grade 3 Selene Stakes here last month sitting behind the speed and then took over at the top of the stretch. Look for a similar trip here this afternoon.
The 3 Katie’s Grace (6/1 ML) closed from the back of the pack in the Selene last month to finish second at huge odds. She has loved two turns so far, but has yet to get to the winner’s circle. There is some speed in this race, so this could set up for her closing style today.
The 2 Dixie Law (4/1 ML) finished third in the Selene and was outfinished by Katie’s Grace last time out. Look for her to make a move late here as well in this race.
The 1 Piper’s Gift (5/2 ML) won the Fury Stakes here at Woodbine last month stalking the leader and surging late for the win. Two turns will not be an issue with this filly as she won a mile and a sixteenth race. She might have the first opportunity to take over the lead when they are on the final turn or at the top of the stretch.

Joe’s Pick
Luster is the filly to beat here today and is going to be tough. She can sit behind the leaders and make that strong winning move. But I will take a chance on Dixie Law who went wide late and could not get to the leader late. Look for Dixie Law to get up late for the win today.
I’m calling this race 2-7-1-3 and my play is $20 to win on the 2. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
