Quills Picks Winners – Monday 7/20 – Parx Race 7

A new week begins and for the last Monday for the next month as Parx will end up going on summer break. So we have one more opportunity to cover a race at Parx before their return on Saturday August 15.

Today’s race is the seventh of an eight-race card. We are featuring a starter allowance optional claiming race going six and a half furlongs on the main track. Eight horses are entered in what should be a beautiful day in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

Parx Race 7 – Starter Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in today’s race is the 7 Play the Gray (3/1 morning line). He drops into a lower level of an optional claiming race while shortening up in distance today. This colt just missed last time out when he was outfinished last month. He should be close to the pace today, sitting on the outside waiting to take over on the turn or in the stretch today.

The 3 Possum (4/1 ML) returns from a 10-week race after closing strongly last time out under these same race conditions. He is a closer and will hope there are some targets that he can catch late in today’s race.

The 8 King Deivys (6/1 ML) closed to finish third here last month in a similar race. He finished strongly in a short field but could not get to the winner. Expect a late rush for him this afternoon as well.

The 1 Docsgotallthecandy (10/1 ML) went for the lead going two turns 12 days ago and tired to finished third in a four-horse race. He appears to be the speed in this race and will try to take the shortest distance from gate to wire. But he has shown a pattern of tiring late.

This is a race that should favor the closers today. There is some speed, and that speed will probably tire. Play the Gray will be ready to pounce but I think that Possum will do what his name suggests and play possum and make a move late here for the win today.
