Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 7/21 – Assiniboia Downs Race 6

It’s Tuesday which means we head north of the border for today’s race of the day. We will be under the lights at Assiniboia Downs as a field of seven horses will go seven furlongs in an optional claiming event.

One thing to note here, especially those pulling up this article for the first time, is the fact that Assiniboia Downs is a six-and-a-half-furlong track. So on this bullring track, they will go two turns in tonight’s race.

Assiniboia Downs Race 6 – Allowance Optional Claiming

Favored in tonight’s featured race is the 5 Chief Brady (7/5 morning line). He stalked dueling leaders down the backstretch and then dueled one of them through the stretch but got passed by the winner. He has some versatility as he can stalk or he can go for the lead.  But he may not like the two turns here today.

The 3 Trulli Warrior (3/1 ML) had all kinds of problems last month in a similarly conditioned race here at AsD. He had to steady down the backstretch after a slow start out of the gate. He returns today looking to have an uneventful start to the race today.

The 2 Buck Owens (4/1 ML) shortens up after losing the lead late in an optional claiming race here three weeks ago. He could not hold off the hard charging winner in that race. He is liking Assiniboia Downs so far finishing second in both tries and the cutback should help him this evening.

The 6 Lab Rat (6/1 ML) is the speed of this race and only knows to gun for the lead. He did just that last month here where he tired late at huge odds but still finished third. If he is alone on the lead here, do not be surprised if he upsets this field tonight. But he does have the tendency of tiring late.

Joe’s Pick

I think we have a favorite that is very beatable despite the short odds. I’m not sure he wants these longer distances. Buck Owens likes the distance, and I think the trouble that Trulli Warrior was fairly significant. If the end, I think Buck holds off Trulli in this race tonight.

I’m calling this race 2-3-5-6 and my play is $20 to win on the 2. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
