Quills Picks Winners – Wednesday 7/22 – Colonial Downs Race 4
After some night racing last night in Canada, we head back to the American side of the border and head to Virginia for today’s race. We have an earlier race on tap today as we will look at race four of an eight-race card.
Today’s race is for fillies and mares going one mile on the main track in an optional claiming race. For those not familiar with Colonial Downs, the one-mile races are a one-turn affair, as the track is a mile and a quarter in circumference. Keep that in mind when handicapping this race today.

Colonial Downs Race 4 – Allowance Optional Claiming
Favored in this afternoon’s race is the 1 White Rocks (4/5 morning line). She comes in from Churchill Downs where she closed well but was turned away by the winner last month. Look for this filly be close to the pace or even on the lead. She has the speed here where she could wire this field of fillies and mares today.
The 7 Kinzie Queen (6/1 ML) is interesting to me. She races for the second time this year after a six-month layoff. She showed little in the Obeah Stakes going a mile and a sixteenth at Delaware Park. She has faced graded stakes company in the past, including champion filly Nitrogen, and held her own in Grade 2 and 3 company. This filly is a closer and may need the other fillies and mares in front of her to go fast today.
The 5 Delray (7/2 ML) stalked the pace in a sprint at Parx three weeks ago and would not get by the winner that day. She stretches back out to a mile this afternoon. Depending on the favorite here, this filly could be on the lead early or pressuring the pace. Also keep in mind that there is a dangerous jockey/trainer combination aboard that wins a ton at Parx as well as Colonial.
The 4 Sheilahs Warcloud (9/2 ML) finished second in a one-turn mile at Laurel Park last month. She was game in defeat after stumbling at the start of the race. Look for her to sit back and try to make a move late here this afternoon.

Joe’s Pick
I think here that White Rocks will be too tough for this field. Having drawn the rail today, I think that she goes for the lead and does not look back on this field. Sometimes our picks are for ROI purposes, but this is definitely a win percentage one.
I’m calling this race 1-7-5-4 and my play is $20 to win on the 1. Best of luck and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
