Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 6/30 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5

We close out the month of June with a trip north of the border for what is our usual Tuesday night stop and Assiniboia Downs. Their featured race here this evening is the fifth of a seven-race card.

We have a field of nine entered in this restricted race for three-year-olds. Horses that were bred in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, North Dakota and South Dakota are eligible for this race going five and a half furlongs.

Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Allowance

Favored in this evening’s race on Canada Day Eve is the 5 Mighty Mikee (2/1 morning line). He was the best juvenile on the grounds last year but regressed in 2026. Last time out he saved ground and did not make a closing move. This looks like it is a “get right” race. Several horses in this race are maidens in this race and should be able to take advantage here.

The 2 Silver Spiced (3/1 ML) tired in his 2026 debut in an open allowance race at Assiniboia. He likes to be close to the pace and should be able to take advantage of the advantageous post.

The 7 Clippity Cop (5/1 ML) is a filly taking on the boys here. She won her debut here at AsD while three-wide and wearing down her rivals. She will face winners for the first time this evening and should get a similar trip here tonight.

The 9 Rise Again (8/1 ML) draws the outside for tonight’s race. She wore down rivals from the outside to break her maiden last time out. She also has faced the boys in the past, having finished third in her debut last August.

Tonight’s race is an interesting race because we have a mix of fillies racing against colts and geldings in today’s race. I have to let Mighty Mikee beat me tonight. He has done nothing in two races this year. He could be AsD’s equivalent of a horse that was the best of the juveniles and the horses on the grounds caught up with him.

I’ll take my chances with Clippity Cop here. She wore down rivals last time out and should be in a good position to do it again this evening. Look for her to do that again here with this field of three-year-olds.
