Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 9/22 – Assiniboia Downs Race 6
We go from an early race yesterday at Finger Lakes to a late race this evening at Assiniboia Downs this evening. The season is winding down at the Winnipeg track and we will take a look at their sixth race this evening.
Race six is a claiming race going seven and a half furlongs. Remember, Assiniboia Downs is a six-and-a-half-furlong track, so you will see this field pass under the wire twice in this two-turn race this evening. With that in mind, let’s take a look at our featured race.
Assiniboia Downs Race 6 – Claiming
Favored in tonight’s race is the 4 No Show No Call (5/2 morning line). He won last time out in a higher level claiming race and drops down to this level this evening. This may just be getting another race into the horse before the season ends. He made a five-wide move to draw off for the win two weeks ago. He will try to make a similar move tonight in this race.
The 1 Lab Rat (5/1 ML) is the speed in this race and could take this field gate to wire today. He dueled and tired badly two weeks ago that the favorite won. There should not be that much pressure on the front end tonight which could be the panacea for tiring like he did last time out.
The 7 Bati King (3/1 ML) finished third in an optional claiming race last time while stalking the pace. This gelding will try to put the pressure on the front runner this evening but he has shown in the past that he is more of a closer than a stalker.
The 9 Makena’s Joy (8/1 ML0 draws the outside post in this race and moves up in class after winning a lower level claiming race at tonight’s distance. Expect this gelding to sit back and try to make a strong late move through the field like he has in his last two races.

If there is ever a race where Lab Rat can get the job done, it is tonight. He draws the rail, which means he gets the shortest distance from start to finish. He shouldn’t have any pressure early on which will mean he won’t tire late in this race. Yes, there are some closers that can make things interesting late, but I think Lab Rat gets the job done here tonight.
