Quills Picks Winners – Monday 9/21 – Finger Lakes Race 2
With Parx on vacation this week after Saturday’s Pennsylvania Derby, we head to Finger Lakes for our race of the day today. They have several stakes on the card this afternoon, and today we will look at one of the early races on the card.
Race 2 is the Lady Finger Stakes for New York-bred juvenile fillies going five and a half furlongs. Six fillies are entered in the race which may be run over a wet track as it was raining overnight in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
Finger Lakes Race 2 – Lady Finger Stakes
Favored in this juvenile filly stakes race is the 5 Sun Kissed Bliss (8/5 morning line). She Won her debut at Saratoga last month with a gate to wire romp. She did have a nice workout since that win and looks to go gate to wire again this afternoon today.
The 3 Sweet Sugar Pie (7/2 ML) won her debut at Finger Lakes last month. She pressured the leader down the backstretch and took the lead at the quarter pole for a nice debut win. She could pressure the favorite from the start here this afternoon.
The 2 Pwr of Persistence (3/1 ML) went gets to wire over a “wet-fast” surface in her debut 12 days ago. She drew off to a nice gate to wire win and will probably be dueling with the favorite early on in this race.
The 6 Beltandsuspenders (5/1 ML) went last to first over a short field to break her maiden last month. She probably is a few notches below the other three fillies mentioned, but she has shown the ability to close unlike the others in this field. She may not win, but she could make things interesting late in this race.

This is a tricky race because you have a short field where you also have some pedigrees that are limited in statistics, so you are guessing what some of these fillies can do.
I think this sets up for Sweet Sugar Pie this afternoon. She won’t be too far off the lead and may get the first opportunity to pass the leaders as they turn for home. I think she will get up over the favorite late for the win today.
